Rhododendron keleticum
Rhododendron Keleticum belongs to the Ericaceae family. It is a deciduous dwarf shrub that is located in the eastern regions of China and in Myanmar. This species was described for the first time in the early 20th century and has made a name for itself through its compact growth form and its striking flowers in botanical gardens and rhododendron enthusiasts worldwide.
Morphology and growth
Rhododendron Keleticum is a dwarf shrub, which usually reaches a height of only 10 to 30 cm, but can spread up to 50 cm. The plant forms dense mats that cover the floor. The leaves are small, elliptical to egg -shaped, about 1 to 3 cm long and 0.5 to 1.5 cm wide. They are dark green and shiny on the top, while the underside is provided with a dense, silver hair that is considered to be adapted to the alpine climate.
The flowers of rhododendron keleticum are bell -shaped and appear in late spring to early summer. They are typically purple colors to violet, whereby the color can vary depending on the location and conditions. The inflorescences consist of 1 to 3 flowers, each with a diameter of about 2 to 3 cm. These striking flowers make the plant an attractive eye -catcher, especially in stone gardens and alpine plantings.
Ecological meaning and habitat
Rhododendron Keleticum naturally grows in alpine and subalpine areas, often on rocky slopes and in rocky slices at altitudes between 3000 and 4500 meters. These extreme conditions require special adjustments such as the compact growth shape and the dense hair of the leaves that help the plant minimize water loss and to protect against intensive sunlight. This species is an important part of the alpine ecosystem because it offers living space and protection for various insects and smaller animals.
Cultivation and care
Rhododendron Keleticum is popular with gardeners who maintain alpine plants and stone gardens. The plant prefers well permeable, acidic soils that are rich in organic substance. A location in full sun to partial shade is ideal, with protection against the intensive lunch sun in warmer climate zones. The irrigation should be carried out regularly, but not excessively, since waterlogging can damage the roots.
The care includes removing dead flowers and leaves as well as the occasional pruning in order to obtain a compact growth shape. Rhododendron Keleticum is relatively hardy, but can need additional protection in particularly cold winters, especially in regions outside of its natural distribution area.
Propagation and breeding
The multiplication of rhododendron keleticum is mainly through seeds or cuttings. Samples need cold stratification to germinate, which makes the propagation process time -consuming. Coats that are taken in late spring or early summer have a higher success rate. In breeding, the focus is on the development of varieties with special flower colors and improved growth conditions.
Diseases and pests
Rhododendron Keleticum can be affected by similar diseases and pests such as other rhododendron species, including root rot, leaf flick diseases and pests such as aphids and rhododendron cubes. Good care practice, including ensuring good drainage and avoiding supervision, can help minimize these problems. In the event of infestation, early treatment with suitable pesticides is advisable.
