Houttuynia cordata - Chameleon plant
Houttuynia cordata, also known as "Chameleon plant", is a multi -year herbaceous plant from the family of the Assauraceae. It originally comes from Southeast Asia and is native to many countries, including China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Due to its medical properties, aroma and its use as an ornamental plant, it has become more important in various parts of the world. The plant is not only valued in traditional medicine, but is also interested in modern research due to its potential health benefits.
Morphology
Houttuynia cordata is a herbaceous, floor -covering plant that can reach a height of about 20 to 50 cm. The plant has heart -shaped leaves, which are about 4 to 9 cm long and 3 to 8 cm wide. These leaves are mostly green, but with certain decorative cultivars, such as the ‘Chameleon’ variety, a color variation can occur, which is shown in yellow-red-green leaf discoloration. The underside of the leaf is often slightly hairy while the top is smooth.
The plant forms underground rhizomes, which enable fast vegetative spread. This makes Hautuynia cordata potentially invasive in some regions, especially in moderate climates, as it can quickly form dense stocks.
The flowers of Houttuynia cordata are inconspicuous and grow in upright, white, ear -like inflorescences. These inflorescences consist of small, greenish to whitish flowers, which are surrounded by four to six white, petal-like leaves. The flowering period typically ranges from May to July.
Distribution and Habitat
Houttuynia cordata grows preferably in moist, shady habitats such as the bank zones of rivers, lakes and ponds as well as in swampy areas and wet meadows. It thrives in floors with good drainage, but prefers locations with a consistently damp soil. In gardens, it is often grown as a ground cover in shady areas, but can also be cultivated in containers to control their spread.
The plant is at home in many countries in East Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and parts of India. In Europe and North America it is often grown as an ornamental plant, but is also occasionally overgrown.
Ecological meaning
Houttuynia cordata is a plant that can contribute to the stabilization of the bank zones in its natural distribution area and to improve the soil structure. The dense mats that form it protect the soil from erosion and help to store moisture in the ground. However, their aggressive spread can become problematic in non-local areas and displace domestic plants.
Traditional medical use
In traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, Houttuynia cordata is known for their versatile applications. It is used both on the outside and internally to treat a variety of symptoms. Traditional uses include the treatment of respiratory infections, fever, bladder infections, skin diseases and gastrointestinal problems. In China, the plant is often used as an anti -inflammatory and antimicrobial agent, especially for lung infections.
Some studies indicate that extracts from the plant have antiviral and antibacterial properties. These effects are attributed to the flavonoids and essential oils it contains, in particular to connections such as decanoylacetaldehyde and methylnonylketone. These connections should have an inhibitory effect on the growth of certain bacteria and viruses.
Houttuynia cordata is also used in modern naturopathy. There is indications that the plant has antioxidant properties that may be able to contribute to improving the immune system and combating free radicals. Nevertheless, further scientific studies are required to fully understand the mechanisms of action and the safety of the application.
Culinary use
In addition to their medical importance, Houttuynia cordata is also used as a culinary herb, especially in Vietnam, China and Japan. The leaves of the plant have an unmistakable, slightly peppery taste, which is often described as earthy or fishy. They are used raw in salads, as a set for soups or as a side dish for various dishes. In Vietnamese cuisine in particular, the plant is a popular ingredient to bring fresh flavors into dishes.
Cultivation and care
Houttuynia cordata is a relatively undemanding plant that grows slightly in damp floors and partially shaded to shady locations. It prefers well permeable, humus -rich soils and can be easily cultivated in most moderate climates. Due to its rapid spread, however, it should be checked regularly to prevent overgrowth. In gardens, it is often kept in containers to contain their spread.
