Salvia coahuilensis - Coahuila sage
Salvia coahuilensis is a multi -year herbaceous plant from the family of the lip flower (Lamiaceae). This species is native in the dry regions of Northeast Mexico and is characterized by its shining flowers, their dry resistance and their adaptability. The botanical name refers to the state of Coahuila in Mexico, where the plant was originally described.
Morphology and appearance
Salvia coahuilensis is a low -growing, compact shrub that reaches a height of 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant has a branched, semi -woody growth with thin, upright to slightly overhanging stems that can be atmosphere at the base.
The leaves are lanceolate, narrow and arranged. Your surface is slightly hairy and you have a greyish-green to medium-green color. This adaptation protects against water loss through evaporation, which is particularly advantageous in the arid habitats. The leaves are also aromatic because they are rich in essential oils.
A special feature of Salvia coahuilensis are the striking, bright purple to purple flowers. These stand in terminal, loosely arranged inflorescences and appear almost all year round, whereby the main flowering time is usually in spring and summer. The flowers are tubular, cygomorphic and have the typical two lip of the lip flower. They are excellently adapted to the pollination by bees and butterflies, which are attracted by the strong colors and the nectar.
Distribution and habitat
Salvia coahuilensis is endemic in the dry and semi-dry areas of Northeast Mexico. The plant prefers to thrive on stony slopes, in an open bushland and in dry grass landscapes. It prefers well -permeable soils and locations with full sunlight.
The plant is adapted to extreme climatic conditions such as dryness and strong temperature fluctuations. This adaptation is not only reflected in their morphology, but also in their ability to survive longer dry periods.
Ecological meaning
Salvia coahuilensis plays an important role in her natural habitat because it is an important source of nectar for pollectrous insects such as bees, butterflies and colibris. Due to its blooming nature, it offers food over a long period of time, which is of particular importance in dry regions.
In addition, the plant contributes to stabilizing soils, especially in areas with low vegetation coverage. Their deep roots help to reduce erosion and support the ecosystem.
Use and meaning
Salvia coahuilensis is increasingly valued as an ornamental plant, especially in dry and Mediterranean gardens. Your bright flowers and compact growth make you a popular choice for beds, stone gardens and dry stone walls. Due to its drought resistance and low care effort, it is particularly suitable for water -saving garden design concepts such as xeriscaping.
The plant only needs minimal care, grows in well -permeable soils and is tolerant compared to heat and drought. In addition to her aesthetic attractiveness, it is occasionally also used in traditional medicine Mexico, although scientific studies on its potential active ingredients have so far been limited.
