Astrophytum ornatum
Astrophytum ornatum belongs to the family of cactus plants (cactaceae). This species is endemic in central Mexico and occurs in the states of Hidalgo, Querétaro and Guanajuato. The cactus grows there in dry desert areas and stony slopes at altitudes of 1000 to 1500 meters above sea level. This special environment requires adjustments to intensive sunlight and low precipitation, which the Astrophytum ornatum shows through special morphological properties.
Morphology and structure
Astrophytum ornatum is characterized by its star -shaped shape and the striking rib. The plant grows upright and reaches heights between 20 and 100 centimeters with a diameter of about 15 to 20 centimeters. It has eight to twelve sharply pronounced ribs that have a wave -shaped structure. Typically, the epidermis of the cactus is green, but covered with dense white wool stains, which look like small asterisks and give the plant an unmistakable appearance. These wool stains reflect sunlight and reduce evaporation, which protects the cactus from water loss.
The thorns of the Astrophytum ornatum are relatively robust and straight; They are distributed along the ribs and grow radially. These thorns not only help to ward off predators, but also contribute to protection against intensive sunlight by throwing shadows on the plant surface.
Flower and reproduction
This cactus is a slowly growing plant that only blooms after about five to ten years. The flowers of Astrophytum ornatum are yellow with an orange center and reach a diameter of five to eight centimeters. They bloom between spring and summer and attract polliging insects such as bees and butterflies. The plant is self -dilated and therefore needs pollinators for seed formation. After pollination, it develops small, fluffy hairy fruits that contain seeds and are spread by wind and water.
Cultivation and care
Because of its decorative form and the striking flowers, Astrophytum ornatum is very popular with cactus lovers. It is relatively easy to care for and thrives in well -permeable, sandy substrates. A full sun is ideal, and the plant should only be watered sparingly, as it is very sensitive to waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. During the rest period in winter, it hardly needs any water. With appropriate care, the cactus in culture can achieve a long service life and produce flowers.
Threats and protective measures
Astrophytum ornatum is threatened in the wild due to habitat loss and illegal collection. The plant is therefore protected in its natural habitat and is regulated in international trade agreements. Due to the cultivation in botanical gardens and the increase in culture, wild population can be relieved and the species can be secured in the long term.
