Astilbe chinensis is one of the more robust types of genus and is both an ornamental plant valued and examined in their natural habitat.
The botanical name Astilbe is derived from the Greek: "A" means "without", and "stilbe" stands for "shine", which probably refers to the reserved texture of the leaves. The species name chinensis refers to its origin in China.
Morphological characteristics
Astilbe chinensis is a persistent perennial that reaches growth heights of 30 to 100 centimeters, depending on the variety and location conditions. The plant forms density Horste and has a strong, horizontally growing rhizome that gives it a good stability.
The leaves are feathered and from dark green to slightly bronze color. They have a serrated leaf blade that is aesthetically appealing due to their texture and form. The leafsticks and leaf veins are often reddish, which increases the visual attractiveness of the plant.
Astilbe chinensis is particularly known for their striking inflorescences. These consist of dense, pyramidal panicles, which are composed of numerous small single flowers. The flower color varies depending on the variety from white to pink to intense purple tones. The flowering period extends from July to August, although the panicles remain decorative even after flowering.
Location and distribution
In their natural distribution, Astilbe chinensis grows in damp forests, along river banks and shady hangers. She prefers well permeable, humus -rich soils and appreciates moist to slightly swampy conditions. Their tolerance to dryness is compared to others Astilbe-Tarten higher, which makes it particularly versatile in garden design.
Astilbe chinensis is at home in China, Korea and parts of Japan. However, it is cultivated as an ornamental plant worldwide and has successfully established itself in moderate climate zones.
Ecological meaning
The plant plays an important role in its natural habitat, where it contributes to stabilizing soils in damp areas. Their flowers offer food for pollinators such as bees, butterflies and other insects. Due to its dense leaf mass, it also offers protection and habitat for small soil organisms.
Cultural and gardening meaning
Astilbe chinensis is often used in ornamental gardens and landscapes, especially in shady areas and damp beds. It is ideal for natural gardens, shady discounts and as under plantation under trees. In combination with other shadow perennes such as ferns, hosta or Rodgersia, it creates harmonious planting images.
In addition to its aesthetic function, it is occasionally also used in traditional Chinese medicine, although its use is limited in this area.
Care and increase
Astilbe chinensis is easy to care for, but requires sufficient moisture, especially during the growth and flowering period. A humus -rich floor and a layer of mulch help to maintain the soil moisture and suppress weeds. The plant benefits from fertilization in spring and occasional pruning to remove dead plant parts.
The propagation is mainly done by sharing the rhizomes in spring or autumn. Sowing is also possible, but less common because the division is faster and more effective.
